Domaine Paul Jaboulet Ainé Hermitage Chevalier de Sterimberg 1992 versus
Domaine M. Chapoutier Hermitage Chante Alouette 1992: well, the Jaboulet was the clear winner here. Very well developed oxidised-type white Hermitage, nice honey and floral notes, great structure and body. The Chapoutier was not showing well, clearly over the hill, which was a bit of a surprise to me, but this being my last bottle I don't care that much.

Bachelet-Ramonet Bienvenue-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 1992: Oh man. The Bachelet-Ramonet was the shame of the night. It lost hands down against the Marc Colin. It was probably over the hill, but then it never could have been much (I never tasted it before because I got it as a gift), because fine 1992 Grand Cru Montrachets are showing pretty well at this age (had a beautiful Guy Amiot Montrachet 1992 recently which I rated 98...). I did not find notes for this wine, but RP does not rate other vintages very high either. No surprise. The Marc Colin was a fine example of a mature white Burgundy, with nice nutty character, butter, good acidity to carry it all.

Domaine Trimbach Clos Ste-Hune 1992 versus
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht Tokay Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl 1992: Again a surprise, as the expected winner was the hands-down loser. Not that I underestimate Clos Ste Hune any day, but was expecting much of the Zind. Well, not. It was dead. Normally it should still be showing something, but there was no structure, no integration. Again a single bottle I had acquired years ago, so I don't know what it was like before. The Clos Ste Hune was a real gem: super focused dry Riesling. One of the guests said it was like a delicate little gem. Really vibrant, beautiful mineral (yes, kerosene!) nose, great length. And this is a weaker year for Riesling in Alsace...

HA. First true great red wine of the night. My in-laws used to buy Trotanoy a lot during the 70s and early 80s, and I always asked for a bottle of the 1982 for my birthday... Unfortunately they wanted to do that only 2 years... But definitely better than nothing! Oh man, this is beautiful wine. Pure, luscious, soft but strong, hedonistic ripe Pomerol. Very refined, great distinction. If you have some, there's no reason to wait to enjoy it. Truly great wine.

Vega Sicilia Unico, Ribera del Duero 1962: I managed to buy 2 bottles of this wine about 10 years ago in a restaurant in Spain. Wine prices in Spanish restaurants are the best I know - typically they seem to add only 10 or 20 percent to the street price. And this restaurant was managed by a widow, who had not adjusted the wine prices since her husband died a couple of years before... So I got these at approximately 70 $/€, along with 2 1979s, and 2 bottles of 1970 La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 890. Gracias!
But unfortunately the wine was not what I hoped it would be. RP's tasting note (from a Unico vertical some years ago) was very promising - he scored it 95. This was not the case. I don't know whether it's the bottle, I guess I'll have to crack the other to be sure. In the nose there were very clear lactic notes, dominating other better aroma's (fine leather, sweet evolved red fruit). In the mouth the wine felt unstructured, really not coming together at all. It was definitely not dead, but just not very good.

Although a very nice wine, it was in difficult company. In fact, the Lynch Bages completely overshadowed it (something I had not expected when I determined the serving order - but then again I made also a mistake with the Trotanoy and the Unico, so you see, things never are what you expect). Clearly Californian, very sweet compared to the others. Also not the complexity of the (better) Bordeaux's - not the terroir notion you get from the others. Really nice, nonetheless, but being crowded out by the Frenchies again.

WOTN 1. Oh boy. Amazing how sweet, velvety, soft, delicate, fine, refined, and yet strong, determined, structured, full-bodied this wine is. The ultimate refinement. The perfumes bedevil you, calling like a siren, irresistible. Superfine cedar, pure ripe fruit. Oh man. And tasting it is even better, true velvet, full body, mile-long finish. WOTN 2. It is almost impossible to believe that there is an even more perfect perfection than the Lalande, but this is it. Really! But this is a perfection that is not allowing us to grasp everything just yet - it's just teasing now with easy to understand aroma's like cassis and other red fruit, cedar and notes of leather but at the same time it's making fun of you, commands you to be humble. Because you're not seeing everything yet. In that incredible concentration lie many more secrets hidden, which it will reveal in proper time (well, I got 2 left, and I was planning the next one for my 50th and the last one for my 60th... That should work). Incredibly concentrated wine, but not in an extracted way - just pure concentration. Incredible structure, eternal length, but really still brooding (although it is absolutely delicious to drink now). It was great to see how you can reach perfection in 2 completely different ways.

It can never be easy to follow in Latour's footsteps, but this Le Pavillon 1992 was not afraid, and managed very well indeed, thank you. Great example of concentrated Hermitage, beautifully refined terroir. Beautiful spicy nose, black berries, still fairly young, but already delicious to drink. Amazing how Chapoutier managed such a wine in a poor year like 1992. I found this at a sale for $/€50 in 1997... A great buy.

It can never be easy to follow in Le Pavillon's footsteps, but this Château d'Ampuis 1995 was not afraid, and managed very well indeed, thank you. Great to see 2 completely different expressions of Northern Rhône Syrah. This was true to its appellation, and indeed (as some have said before) like a slightly less concentrated blend of the Lala's, with a very similar style and finesse. To think I bought these at $/€40 in 1999... Luckily I bought a case!

If anyone can tell me more about this wine, I'd like to hear from you! I tasted this at a show a few years back and thought it was absolutely stunning, so I bought some bottles (was not really cheap at approx. $/€60). I have found nothing on this wine, not on ERP, not at Tanzer's, not even in the Gambero Rosso! And googling for it does not help either. Strange, because this is a truly magnificent wine, super concentrated, very rich, still very young (blackberries, spices, well-integrated oak). Very long. Really nice wine.

If you've never tasted the Don PX Reserva's from Toro Albala, then stop reading now and do something about it. This is the only almost true black wine I've ever seen, and this is where it starts to fool you. Because on sight you're expecting something heavy over-oxidised, but instead you're getting fresh, vibrant aroma's of white fruit, with a very light but firm structure in the mouth, and the acidity nicely balancing the residual sugar. Absolutely beautiful. I still got some left in that bottle which I will definitely enjoy tonight!
